Madeleine's Original Portuguese Egg Tarts Returns at Aperia Mall with a Macau-Style Cafe

After nearly two years away from Singapore's food scene, Madeleine's Original Portuguese Egg Tarts is back, this time as a full Macanese cha chaan teng at Aperia Mall in Kallang. The brand reopened on 21 June 2026 under a new generation of owners, siblings Zac Ong (22, a SHATEC graduate) and Vernice Ong (18), who tracked down the original elderly couple and apprenticed under them to keep the recipe alive.

A Comeback Story

The brand first earned a cult following in Tanjong Katong back in 1998. The original shop closed in August 2024 when the building was sold, ending a 26-year run that had made its Portuguese egg tarts a quiet east-side institution. The siblings, who had been fans of the brand since childhood, were dismayed by the closure and approached the elderly stall owners to learn the ropes. Now armed with the original recipes and culinary skills, they have revived the brand with a modern twist, opening as a Macanese cha chaan teng at Aperia Mall, complete with main dishes and new bakes alongside the signature tarts.

Opening Promotion: Free Mini Egg Tart With Every Main

To mark the comeback, Madeleine's is running a grand opening promotion that entitles you to a free mini egg tart with every main ordered. Mains in the promotion include the Crab Congee (SGD 8.90), the Minchee Rice (SGD 10.90) and the Pan-Roasted African Chicken (SGD 9.80). The end date has not been announced at the time of writing, so drop by soon if you want to lock in the free tart.

The Menu: Egg Tarts and Macanese Comfort Food

The signature Portuguese Egg Tart (SGD 2.50) remains the star, with the same flaky crust, caramelised top and silky custard pudding that built the brand's reputation. Alongside the original tart, the siblings have added a Gula Melaka Portuguese Egg Tart (SGD 2.50), a Bolo Bun (SGD 3.50) and a Pork Chop Bun (SGD 5.90), mixing local flavours with Macanese classics.

What to Order on Your First Visit

Start with the signature Portuguese Egg Tart (SGD 2.50), still made from the original recipe. Add the Minchee Rice (SGD 10.90), a Macanese classic reworked with beef and pork ragu, potato confit and a silky 63-degree onsen egg over jasmine rice. If you want something soupier, the Crab Congee (SGD 8.90) is a comfort pick, while the Pan-Roasted African Chicken (SGD 9.80) brings a smoky, mildly spiced option that pairs well with the sweet tarts. The Beef Stew with Capellini (SGD 9.90), tender beef stew served with springy al dente capellini tossed in scallion oil, is another hearty main worth ordering.

Why the Aperia Mall Comeback Matters

Aperia Mall sits in Kallang, a short walk from Bendemeer MRT, and the new outlet brings the brand closer to residents in the Lavender, Kallang and Bendemeer belt. The original Tanjong Katong shop had drawn queues from across the island for nearly three decades, and the closure in 2024 left a real gap in the east-side egg tart scene. The siblings' decision to revive the brand as a cha chaan teng rather than a takeaway-only stall is a meaningful shift, it lets the tarts sit alongside proper Macanese mains, which makes the cafe viable for lunch and dinner rather than just a snack stop.

The opening promotion, with a free mini egg tart for every main ordered, is the most aggressive deal the brand has run in years, and it is worth locking in while it lasts. For east-side residents, the Aperia Mall revival brings a beloved heritage brand back to the neighbourhood, no more crossing the island for quality Portuguese egg tarts.
